Historical Background
The Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus traces its combined history to 1572, when the traditions of the Order of Saint Maurice and the Order of Saint Lazarus were united under the House of Savoy.
The order later became closely associated with the House of Savoy and the Kingdom of Italy. Its distinctive green-and-white insignia remains one of the most recognizable designs among historic Italian chivalric orders.
The Grand Cross represented the highest grade and was traditionally associated with elaborate ceremonial insignia worn from a broad shoulder sash.
