  • Background of the Medal:

In the late 18th century, the seas were a theater of conflict as Britain sought to enforce its dominance during the American War of Independence. Neutral nations found their merchant fleets under constant threat, with ships seized and commerce disrupted.

In response, Catherine II of Russia spearheaded the creation of the League of Armed Neutrality in 1780, joined by Sweden, Denmark, and later the Netherlands. The alliance declared that neutral nations had the right to trade freely without interference, provided they did not carry contraband. This was a milestone in the development of international maritime law and a direct challenge to Britain’s naval policies.

The commemorative medal embodies both politics and faith. The obverse depicts shields of the allied nations hanging from a sword-wielding arm, signifying unity and strength. The reverse bears an inscription invoking Jehovah, beneath the radiant Eye of Providence, framing the treaty not merely as a political pact but as a sacred covenant under God’s watchful eye.

Thus, the piece is both a religious symbol and a historical artifact, reflecting how faith and politics intertwined in 18th-century Europe.

🙏 A meaningful religious and historical collectible, ideal for collectors of Christian medals, Jehovah items, and naval history artifacts.
