Replica of the Order of Karl Marx (Karl-Marx-Orden), the highest decoration of the German Democratic Republic (GDR).

The order was founded on May 5, 1953, the 135th anniversary of Karl Marx’s birth, during Karl Marx Year. It was awarded by the Council of Ministers of the GDR to individuals, enterprises, organizations, and military groups for exceptional merit in ideology, culture, economy, and service to the state. It could also be awarded to citizens of other countries.
