Description:
Replica of the Military Merit Cross, 2nd Class (Militärverdienstkreuz 2. Klasse), an award of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The decoration was instituted in 1849 by Emperor Franz Joseph I to honor officers for exceptional service, leadership, or acts of bravery. In 1860, it was reorganized into three classes, with the 2nd Class typically bestowed upon higher-ranking officers or those who had repeatedly demonstrated valor and command excellence.
The design features a white enamel Maltese cross edged in red, encircled by a golden laurel wreath, with the inscription “VERDIENST” (Merit) at the center. The medal is suspended from a red-and-white bow ribbon, as historically worn with this class.
