This is a modern replica medal, inspired by the Imperial Russian medal “For the Storming of Akhulgo” established in 1839 under Emperor Nicholas I.
The original award was given to participants in the siege and assault of the Avar stronghold of Akhulgo (June 12 – August 23, 1839) during the Caucasian War against the forces of Imam Shamil.
In total, about 12,595 original medals were produced and awarded to soldiers and officers of the Russian Empire who took part in this campaign. The decoration symbolized service, endurance, and participation in one of the most significant operations of the war.
