This is a modern replica medal, inspired by the Imperial Russian commemorative medal established in 1909 under Tsar Nicholas II to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava (1709–1909).
The Battle of Poltava, fought on June 27, 1709, was a decisive victory of Tsar Peter the Great’s forces over the Swedish army led by Charles XII. The outcome marked the decline of Sweden as a great power and the rise of Russia as a major force in European affairs.
The original 1909 medal was issued to commemorate this turning point in Russian and European military history.
