This is a modern replica medal, inspired by the Imperial Russian Cross of St. George awarded to soldiers of non-Christian faiths. Instead of depicting St. George slaying the dragon, this version displayed the Imperial double-headed eagle, making it distinct from the standard issue.
The original Cross of St. George (Georgiyevskiy krest) was introduced in 1807 as the Decoration of the Military Order of Saint George. It became one of the most respected military awards of the Russian Empire, recognizing acts of bravery by lower ranks.
The decoration was later reinstated in 1992 in the modern Russian Federation awards system.
