This is a modern replica medal, inspired by the Imperial Russian commemorative medal established on September 16, 1903 to mark the 50th anniversary of the defense of Sevastopol (1854–1855) during the Crimean War.
The original medal was awarded to:

Holders of the earlier “For the Defense of Sevastopol” medal.

Military and non-combatant personnel, clergy, and sisters of mercy who took part in the battles of Alma, Balaklava, Inkerman, and the Black River.
