Background
Instituted in 1807, the Cross of St. George honored enlisted bravery in Imperial Russia. To accommodate Muslim, Buddhist and other non-Christian servicemen, a variant was issued bearing the state eagle instead of the saint—while retaining the same grades and ribbon.
