The medal commemorated the siege and capture of the mountain fortress village of Akhulgo, a stronghold of Avar leader Imam Shamil. The siege lasted from June 12 to August 23, 1839, and was part of the Russian Empire’s campaigns during the Caucasian War.
A total of 12,595 original medals were issued to Russian soldiers and officers who participated in the operation. The award symbolized the Russian Empire’s determination to extend control over the Caucasus region.
