The earliest conferrals took place in 1815. Over time, the order expanded in classes and variations, with distinctions such as oak leaves, swords for war merit, and additional grades introduced throughout the 19th century.
Design features of the Grand Cross Breast Star:

-
Associated with the highest class of the order

Sometimes awarded with swords to denote military merit
By 1918, the order comprised six classes, including the Grand Cross and various Commander and Knight classes. Civil awards were given without swords, while military service was recognized with swords.
