The War Medal 1939–1945 was instituted by the United Kingdom on 16 August 1945. It was awarded to eligible full-time members of the British Armed Forces, Merchant Navy and qualifying Commonwealth personnel for service during the Second World War.

Design

The obverse features the crowned left-facing portrait of King George VI, surrounded by the inscription: GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX ET INDIAE IMP:

The reverse design depicts a lion standing over a double-headed dragon, symbolising victory in the European and Asian theatres of the Second World War, together with the dates 1939 and 1945.

Ribbon

Supplied with the distinctive red, dark blue and white ribbon traditionally associated with the War Medal 1939–1945. The colours are based on those of the British Union Flag.
