In excellent condition and of highest rarity. Created by Emperor Alexander I . (1777-1825) on August 15, 1806, the Medal according to Diakov (DIA3 p. 84) was conferred to all 32 men of the two ships „Nadeshda" and „Neva", who had taken part in the expedition. A Russian auction catalog contains the information, that the indication of the bestowal numbers of 32 only concerns the ship Neva, as only these files still exist.
The expedition for the circumnavigation of the world started in August 1803 in the port of Kronstadt under the personal patronage of Emperor Alexander I. (1777-1825) and Baron Nikolai Petrovich Rezanov (1764-1807), consisting originally of the British ships „Nadeshda" and „Neva", commanded by the Baltic-German captain Johann Adam Ritter von Krusenstern (1770-1846). The reasons for this expedition, besides the scientific ones, were to develop direct commercial relations with China and Japan, to simplify commerce with South America and to develop California for a possible colonization. After a voyage lasting nearly three years, having passed Cape Horn, in the Southern Pacific Ocean and passing the Cape of Good Hope, the expedition successfully returned in August 1806 to Kronstadt. After his return, Krusenstern published his expeditionary description in the German language in 1810 in At. Petersburg with the title "Reise um die Welt in den Jahren 1803, 1804, 1805 und 1806 auf Befehl Seiner Kaiserliche Majestдt Alexanders des Ersten auf den Schiffen Nadeschda und Newa". For this publication and for his great scientific merits, he was awarded the Royal Prussian Order „pour le mйrite" for arts and science on May 31, 18 42, in it's creation year, as one of the very first foreign knights. Already in 1841 he had become a Russian Admiral, after having received highest Russian and foreign orders of merit.
