This reproduction represents the Red Cross Medal in Memory of the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905). The original was instituted in 1906 and awarded to members of the Russian Red Cross Society and their staff: doctors, nurses, pharmacists, orderlies, and volunteers who served in hospitals, trains, and sanitary units. It also honored those who contributed funds or supplies to the society.

By decree of Emperor Nicholas II (March 27, 1907), eligibility was extended to officers, service personnel, and others in the military department.
