History (context)
On 19 February 1861 (March 3, New Style) Tsar Alexander II issued the Emancipation Manifesto, abolishing serfdom for more than 20 million peasants in the Russian Empire. Contemporary medals marked the reform and were presented to officials, clergy, and contributors to the emancipation effort. This piece is a faithful replica capturing the symbolism of enlightenment and thanksgiving used on the original awards.
