This is a modern replica medal, inspired by the Imperial Russian “For the Salvation of the Perishing” award from the reign of Nicholas II (1894–1917). The original medal recognized heroic acts of saving lives, whether at sea, during fires, or in other perilous situations.

• Reverse: Cyrillic text “За спасение погибавшихъ” meaning “For the Saving of the Perishing.”

Nicholas II, the last Emperor of Russia, ruled from 1894 until his abdication in 1917. His reign ended with the February Revolution, and he and his family were executed in 1918.
